TROPICA® - Peruian Cactus (Matucana madisoniorum syn. submatucana.m) - 40 Seeds
Worth knowing: This very rare, little and globular cactus especially captivates by its sparsely distributed but firm spines. Carmine flowers, 5 to 7 cm in size, develop several times during the year. Since the roots grow shallowly, the Peruian Cactus even thrives in shallow trays.
Origin: Native to the warm, 400 to 800 meter high situated river valleys of Peru. The plant is threatened with extinction in its natural habitat.
Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year. Mix fine ground cultivation soil with about 25 % of fine sand (silica sand works best). In order to guarantee that the seeds will not fall through the soil, the soil mixture should not be too coarse. All cacti are light germinators, therefore the seeds should be left uncovered. Sufficient warmth (16 to 25°C) and high humidity are crucial now. Every seed tray should be covered with foil or a glass plate and should be aired for about 2 hours every 2–3 days.
Place / Light: Sunny and bright window sills are ideal. Temperatures can vary, should however not fall below 12°C.
Care: Water only after the substratum has dried out. Young plants should generally be kept a little moister. Rain water and water free of lime are ideal. A surplus of water should be poured out in order to avoid standing water and root rotting. Supply the plant with liquid cactus fertilizer every 3 weeks during its flowering period. F
Winter period: The plant is able to spend the winter in both, warm and cold climate. Temperatures should however never drop below 12°C. Water very little.
Bonsai Suitability: No
