A native of China and Korea, it is a deciduous shrub armed with vicious spines and will survive temperatures as low as –20C. It grows satisfactorily in the UK producing small, yellow and slightly furry ‘oranges’ which are unpalatable due to the presence of a bitter oil called Ponciridin. Flying Dragon's thorns are long and curved on a small plant (up to 6'). Extremely ornamental with corkscrew growth habit. A show-stopper at the nursery, especially with it's display of orange fruit in the fall! Will take below zero temperatures planted in the ground, so it is the hardiest of citrus along with the straight thorn Poncirus. No insect or disease problems. Flower: White, 5 petals, 1 to 2 inches across and very fragrant, appearing in spring. Fruit: Fruits are highly aromatic but are inferior to lemons, being seedy, resin-like, and not . Not to be eaten whole fresh. Yellowish orange, 1 to 1 1/2 inches across, fuzzy and very sour, numerous seeds, ripen in late summer. Zone: 5 to 9 Bloom Time: April to May Sun: Full sun
